1. Background Information: Problems
Under Our Exam Techniques section, different research-based general techniques and
specific techniques (subject-based/topic-based ...) have carefully been
prepared and presented with explanations! But before presenting the details, let's briefly summarize the reasons behind the contents in this section!
One of the key problems that I identified (from my research and day-to-day experience) is that both the students and the books they studied for exams had drawbacks/weaknesses related to exam techniques/ taking strategies. On the other hand, there are a number of researches that proved many students fail exam or score poor marks not only due to lack of subject matter knowledge, but also due to lack of exam techniques! Exam answering has its own science/formulas/strategies. These have been proved by a number researches.
☞ Students' Drawbacks/Problems: 2 main problems
The students had two main problems.- They had lack of exam answering skills and exam answering techniques. They lacked "exam answering skills" means, most of them were not able to give justifications for their answers. For example, let's say he/she said that his/her answer is B. But he/she is able to give justifications the reasons why they said B and also why the rest choices can't be answer.
- The students lacked "exam answering techniques" means, they did not have techniques could help them to answer exam questions in systematic and efficient way.
☞ Drawbacks Related to the Books
Lack of test taking skills/exam techniques was not only students' drawbacks but also the drawbacks of the reference books and the exam books.- They didn't show students how to answer questions.
- They give questions and explanation about the questions; finally, the answer.
- They said nothing about how the given question was answered and also how to answer these type of questions could be answered in future (techniques that could help for future).
- Sometimes, some of them said ‘Hint’ and give a few explanations.
Additional
Taking an old proverb, Griffiths (2004) stated briefly the importance of teaching students generally learning strategy and particularly exam answering techniques. “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him how to fish and he eats for a lifetime”. If students are provided with answers, the immediate problem is solved. But if they are taught the strategies to work out the answers for themselves, they are empowered to manage their own learning.
